Most every day of filming was plagued with unexplained and often dangerous effects.
Nine people died while filming the movie – possibly because equipment used to make the film would fall at night and the set would randomly catch fire without explanation.
Two of the actors who were killed in the film died before the film was ever released. The entire McNeil home set burned, save for the possessed character “Regan’s” bedroom where the possessed child was in the film.
In fact, the film was so cursed the director actually brought in a real priest to bless the set. While it’s hard to imagine what kind of priest would agree to bless a demonic possession movie, he was quoted as saying there was a “horrifying darkness” present at filming.
Both actresses Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn suffered severe injuries during filming. Burstyn’s injuries to her spinal cord were unfortunately longer-lasting and she lives with them today.
To wrap up the many cursed instances of “The Exorcist,” the premiere in Rome’s Metropolitan Theater saw a massive thunderstorm. Lightning came down from the storm and struck two crosses atop 16th-century churches. One of the crosses even collapsed. Now that’s scary.
