The “Superman” curse seems to be fairly long-running and rife with bad luck and downright creepy coincidences. First, George Reeves, the original Superman on the 1950s television show, was found dead from a single gunshot wound to the head.
While the police said the death was a suicide, there were no fingerprints on the gun. That’s more than a little fishy, huh?
Fast-forward to the next Mr. Reeve (no s) to wear the cape: Christopher Reeve. He played Superman in four successful movies and was tragically thrown from a horse in 1995, becoming paralyzed from the neck down.
Other tragic stories from the Reeve-era “Superman” movies include Margot Kidder, who has bipolar disorder that likely kept her from becoming a top Hollywood star. Also, Lee Quigley, who was baby Kal-El in the original “Superman” movie, died of inhalant abuse as a teenager at age 14.
Perhaps the Superman curse stems from the fact the creators of Superman were probably cursing most productions themselves. Apparently creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were under contract with DC Comics when they created Superman, so DC Comics made a lot of money due to Superman… and that duo didn’t. Maybe if the company had paid a little more dough, the franchise wouldn’t have to contend with its bad karma.
