This unique strategy was revolutionary in baseball recruitment, taking analytical measures rather than statistics to gage players and set positions.
This movie stars Brad Pitt as Billy Beane and includes Jonah Hill for comedic relief.
Billy Beane is the manager for the Oakland A’s and he needs to figure out how to start winning. He doesn’t have the player payroll like the Yankees do and he is frustrated.
Beane comes up with a unique way to scout players. Instead of using player scouts, he decides to find players with the highest on base percentages and makes offers to these players. High on base percentages are not an indicator most scouts look at when trying to find the next best players in baseball.
His strategy is unique, and causes a lot of dissention among higher ups in the Oakland A’s franchise. The season starts out dismally, and critics begin to believe that Beane’s strategy was all wrong. The team turns around their losing streak and goes on to a twenty game winning streak.
Beane was reportedly offered $12.5 million to become the highest paid General Manager of the Boston Red Sox, but he refused the offer.
