Investigators said the star’s death was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. Officially, her death was listed as accidental but “with possible suicide tendencies.”
The actress, who had appeared in Marx Brothers’ hits like “Monkey Business,” had financial difficulties at the time of her death and may have been depressed.
Her friends rejected the official ruling, claiming Todd she was in good spirits and would not have committed suicide.
It was also reported that earlier in the evening, the actress had had a violent run-in with her ex-husband, Pat DiCicco, a man she had previously accused of spousal abuse. She had a bloody lip when her body was found, and blood spots were found in the car.
Still, cops concluded that Todd’s death was accidental, despite the belief within Todd’s close circles that bad feelings about the break up had led her ex, Pat DiCicco, to kill her.
No thorough autopsy was ever carried out on Todd’s body. After a superficial examination, an autopsy surgeon told the Coroner’s Inquest that he had found “no marks of violence anywhere upon or within the body” and that Todd suffered only a “superficial contusion on the lower lip”.
No evidence of homicide was brought forward. Todd’s body was cremated, preventing a second autopsy. The case remains an official suicide.
