The rapper, born Christopher George Wallace, was just 24 when he was killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997.
According to witnesses, Biggie’s unknown assailant was an African American male dressed in a blue suit and driving a Chevrolet Impala SS.
The man allegedly drew a pistol and fired four bullets, instantly killing Smalls. He’s never been found.
At the time, many believed that Biggie’s murder was related to that of fellow rapper and rival Tupac Shakur. Just six months before Biggie’s death, Shakur and record label executive Suge Knight were the victims of a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas that left Shakur dead.
One theory suggests that one of Bad Boy Entertainment’s stars, which included Biggie Smalls, may have arranged for Tupac Shakur to be shot. Small’s death could have been a revenge killing for the initial shooting.
However, Wallace’s mother, Voletta Wallace, claimed the police were responsible for Biggie’s murder and brought a lawsuit against the LAPD in 2002.
The lawsuit was dismissed and, in the years since the two most infamous murders in hip-hop history, police have made no arrests. Although the rivalry and enmity between Smalls and Shakur was real, no evidence links the two murders. Both cases are still officially under investigation.
